    The emergence and definition of the conservative tradition. Like so much of the vocabulary of modern politics and social science, the term ‘conservative’ can be traced back to the early nineteenth century (Vierhaus , i, pp. –85).Its first use was apparently in the title of the weekly journal founded in by Francois René de Chateaubriand (–) and Louis de Bonald ( French philosophy in the 18th century was deeply political. It was heavily imbued with Enlightenment principles and many of its philosophers became critics of church and state and promoters of rationality and progress. These philosophers would come to have a deep influence on the politics and ideologies of France and America.
